Hag stones

Holed stones, at lest the ones that bear holes due to nature, have long been considered magical in Europe. They are also called hag stones, holey stones, serpent stones, fairy stones, and many other names.  They aren't easy to find in most areas, as only a few types of stones exposed to the right processes of erosion will form holes.  If you are fortunate enough to live near a beach with the right type of shale or sandstone, you can likely comb the beaches for one.  If not, there are a few places online where you can order them. I happened to be on the right sort of beach recently, and so I picked up a couple.

Some folklore attributes protective powers to these stones (such as warding off the Evil Eye), and others claim that they can cure illness (a few very large ones in Wales and Cornwall are reputed to be able to cure illness if the sick person is passed through the hole at the right time on the right day).  These are also said to be able to reveal things such as witches and faeries.  They are also said to ease child-birthing and prevent the theft of livestock (you could thread one onto your pet's collar).

Part of their magic is certainly due to the mysterious way in which they form.  Most stones weather the beach by becoming smooth and polished.  These not only have the smooth feel of sand scrubbed stone, but they also have inexplicable holes (likely formed form small burrowing shellfish and barnacles, but still amazing and magical).  Look through the hole, and your perspective shifts:  a tiny portion of the landscape comes into clear focus.  Details are revealed when we lose the bigger picture, and this is magic at it's simplest.

A witch's tool box is often full of roots and leaves and flowers.  Crystals and other shiny, sparkling stones are well known magical tools, but sometimes the most powerful objects are the ones that have little shine.  Hag stones, seemingly ordinary stones bearing a hole through them, are among these.  If you are lucky enough to find one, thank the spirits for it, tuck it in you pocket, and use it to focus your energy.  Tie to a string and wear it as an amulet or keep it with your special magical gear to help you slip from this world to the other.

Artichokes, another magical food

I spent the weekend on the central California coastline near Monterey.  In addition to the refurbished canneries that are now trendy hotels and shops and tourist traps, and the well known Monterey Bay Aquarium, this region is the place were John Steinbeck drew the inspiration for many of his novels from Tortilla Flat  and Cannery Row to The Grapes of Wrath and In Dubious Battle. It also the area that grows the vast majority of the American food supply.  Cool, moist air rolls off the Ocean and into the Central Valley, and produce stands dot the roadways.  Right now, artichokes, garlic, cherries, nectarines and strawberries are in season.  I bought four glorious, huge, round artichokes to steam for dinner, and I can't wait to taste them.

Artichokes are part of the same family of plants as thistles.  If you ever see them growing, you'll see why.  As such, they share some the same magical attributes.  Their sharp, pointy leaves keep danger at bay. If you are facing a situation in which you need protection, eat an artichoke, leaf by leaf and see the danger past (If you are in immediate danger, please contact the police, fire department, medical professional or mental health care provider!).  Pair them with melted butter to help protect your finances or lemon juice to protect from jealousy. Artichokes have also been associated with sexual desire.  Lovers can share one of these amazing flowers as an aphrodisiac, especially the heart.  Serve artichokes with mayonnaise to increase the aphrodisiac properties, but skip the garlic to avoid unpleasant odors.

I hope that you get a chance to enjoy an artichoke this spring.  They are a wonderful treat while they are in season and are powerful magical ingredients.  If you can't find them fresh in your area, I'm rather spoiled as I get produce from this region at my local farmer's market, try canned artichoke hearts on pizza or pasta.  Cheers!

Infused vinegar for eating, cleaning and beautifying

I use vinegar for all sorts of things: cleaning windows, unclogging drains, laundry, sunburns, hair rinse, preservative.  It's cheap; it's safe to use around kids and pets, and it's effective.  It also doesn't smell the nicest. I've known for years about infused vinegars for cooking, but it's only recently that I've been introduced to them for other purposes.

It started when I was researching homemade shampoo recipes.  One recipe called for a vinegar rinse, but the author recommended infusing the vinegar with flowers or herbs to make it smell better.  I started with batch of rose vinegar, mostly because I have a big bag of dried rose petals.  I've now make mint vinegar and just started some clementine vinegar this week.

The process is simple- one handful of dried herb, petals (dry or fresh) or citrus rind in about two cups of vinegar (I'm using white vinegar because that's what I keep on hand, but apple cider vinegar would work with rose petals or fruit).  Heat them to simmering in a sauce pan then transfer to a glass container (very important as vinegar will etch some plastics and corrode many metals).  Cap off and allow to stand for two weeks or more out of direct sunlight.  When you are ready to use the vinegar, you can strain the petals, herbs or rinds out with a mesh strainer or cheesecloth.

Match your vinegar with an herb or essential oil that suits your magical needs and you can use your housekeeping time to further your magical goals (orange peels for happiness, lemons to guard against jealousy, mint to increase prosperity, lavender for peace).  Rinse your hair with flower vinegar to remove build up fro m your hair and promote energetic vibrations of love, peace, and beauty.  Please note that chamomile should be used only by blonds as it will lighten hair over time, but not necessarily in the way brunettes or redheads are hoping for.

Herb and flower vinegars are an excellent way to add some magic to your housekeeping, reduce your use of petrochemicals, and make scents (I'm so very punny today) that you like.  Give them a try, and be sure to let me know what vinegars you love best.

April's Overview

April...it's about relationships!

(even though it's April Fools I'm not joking)

Spring is in the air!  Aries, ruled by Mars greats us at the beginning of the month and Taurus, ruled by Venus, takes us out.  With the symbol for Mars being the same as that which is used for "male" and Venus "female" how could this month not be about relationships?  Mars being masculine leading the beginning of the month we are more action oriented.  Venus at the end of the month is feminine and we should not to rush things in order to savor each moment (I need to remember that).   Also Mars is analytical so don't stress yourself out by over analyzing everything (another thing I need to remember)!

The Aries New Moon occurs on Wednesday, April 10th amplifying the already present need to make a connection(s) in all relationships.  We are also daring this month in that we will also feel the need to test these connections to see how strong they are.  This may cause past relationship issues to come to the surface.  Don't project your fears onto others; deal with them so that these relationships that are formed are healthy, not a repeat of a cycle yet to be broken.

Full Moon Lunar Eclipse on Thursday April 25th will have us reaching out for harmony, especially in relationships'.  Unlike the previous weeks try to slow down.  It's the journey not the destination that's the important part.  Planning has it's benefits as does flying by the seat of our pants but everything has a place & time.

The relationship connection is another step in our own sense of change.  Change although fearful can also be incredibly rewarding.  Enjoy this month and welcome the new people in with open arms.  I believe people are in our lives for a reason, even if we do not know why or for how long.  Learn from them!

"Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty.  To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom." ~ Bertrand Russell
